I really like colorful wallpapers but then I always find myself lost when looking for icons on the desktop, because they mix too much with the background. So I was wondering if I can do something about it and here is the result - Vista Like Wallpaper.
When I finished it i noticed it reminds me of the upcoming Windows Vista style - hence the name. The effect is really simple but it's the idea that counts. I will show you how to get from the left picture to the right picture and I have also prepared a few Vista like wallpapers for you to download. |

Step 1. Resize |

| |

|
| |
First open a picture you decided to use as a wallpaper. You should resize it to fit your resolution. The resolutions are for example 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1400x1050, etc. If you don't know your resolution you can check it out by right clicking on desktop -> Display Properties -> Settings |

I decided to use a picture of grass in the wind that I took a few days ago. The original image was 2816x2112 px and I have resized it to my resolution which is 1400x1050 px. |

Step 2. Select |

| |

|
See how many icons you have on desktop and approximate what size is the area that they take up. Then select a similar area on your picture.
I have my icons in three rows on the left side of the desktop so I selected a longitudinal area on the left. |

Step 3. Gaussian Blur |
|
| |
|
|
| |

|
For the softening effect I used Gaussian Blur. Gaussian Blur Quickly blurs a selection by an adjustable amount. Gaussian refers to the bell-shaped curve that is generated when Photoshop applies a weighted average to the pixels. The Gaussian Blur filter adds low-frequency detail and can produce a hazy effect.
Apply Gaussian Blur by selecting Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
Control the strength of the blur with Radius. |
